To Muncie, With Love

I was invited to collaborate with students in Maura Jasper & Brent Cole’s “Professional Practices for the Visual Artist“ class at Ball State University to create a multi-faceted free public program presented in partnership with the Muncie Arts & Culture Council.

The project required multiple visits to Muncie to meet with students and plan and execute the project. As a precursor to the project, I gave a public lecture about my community-facing and participatory projects at Plyspace Residency Program. I met with students to ideate a unique series of events and organize a print-based exchange portfolio, facilitated by Kim and Rob at Tribune Showprint, the oldest continuously operating print shop in the country.

We titled the project “To Muncie, With Love” — it included a free kite-making & -flying workshop called KITE JAM!, a day-long radio residency takeover of Ball State’s WCRD 91.3, and a pop-up exhibition. The radio programming included call-in karaoke, C.V. Radio (where I did a live reading of excerpts from Kerry James Marshall’s C.V.), student interviews, and songs about kites. The project concluded with a pop-up show at Munciemakes exhibition space in conjunction with Muncie’s First Thursday monthly gallery walk event. It featured community karaoke, a pocket poetry interactive zine workshop, and an exhibition of limited edition letterpress posters printed by the students at Tribune Showprint. So fun!!!
